End Robo-Calls From Politicians For Free
Robotic calls, either to your cell phone or landline, are disruptive and annoying. You are also responsible for any phone charges on your cell phone. This popular new way to spread political messages is restricted by federal laws and there is an easy way for you to stop them. No method is entirely foolproof, but if you follow the right steps you will at least be able to take action if you receive another political robo call again.
The first step in ending robo calls for free is to add all of your phone numbers to the National Do Not Call Registry. This registry is managed by the FTC — the Federal Trade Commission — and its goal is to protect consumers from disruptive phone calls. The registry website, found at donotcall.gov, allows you to add up to three phone numbers at a time. Adding your email address completes the registration and you will receive a confirmation email. For more than three numbers, simply register again with the same or a different email address.
The second step is waiting up to a couple of weeks, during which it is possible that you will still receive robo calls or other phone spam. It takes time for the registry to spread the information and ensure that your phone number is on the list. Once the waiting period has passed, if you receive a robo call, you can report that number on the Do Not Call website, and they will be investigated.
The third step is removing your phone number from political mailing lists and organizations. Even if you’re on the Do Not Call list, if you have signed up with an organization or given them your contact information, they are allowed to contact you. Even robo calls are allowed if you have provided your phone number. Call each politician or organization sending you robo calls and specifically request that your number and contact information be removed from their lists. Ask for confirmation of this, and take down the time of the call and the name of the person you spoke with. This gives you information to use if you receive further robo calls in the future.
Finally, keep your phone number more private in future to keep it from landing on a robo call list. Take it down from social media sites, or at least make sure the privacy is set so only close friends can see it. Keep your private information private and soon you will only receive calls you choose.
